Deaconess Seeks Coordinator, Building Maintenance

Deaconess Center for Child Well-Being is a community action tank. Its mission is to build power to advance child well-being in the St. Louis region by strengthening alliances for child-friendly public policy, increasing citizen contact with policy makers, positioning youth and organizers to move systems and engaging faith communities in child advocacy. The 21,000 square foot facility is expected to host more than 250 gatherings focused on children and headquarters for Deaconess Foundation, Vision for Children at Risk and Neighborhood Houses.

Position Summary

The primary responsibility of this full-time position is the maintenance and operation of Deaconess Center to keep building and grounds clean and safe.  The secondary responsibility is logistical support of meeting rooms and convening spaces. Duties include regular cleaning, operation and preventative maintenance of building systems (mechanical, electrical and plumbing), set-up and transition of meeting rooms and assisting  Deaconss Center Manager as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and operate building systems (mechanical, electrical and plumbing), including basic repairs as needed

  • Clean floors, windows, fixtures, stairs, restrooms and doors, following procedures for proper care to prevent damage

  • Gather and empty trash and recycling

  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms

  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment

  • Set up, arrange, and remove tables and chairs to prepare facilities for meetings and events

  • Maintain grounds by watering plants, shoveling snow, removing debris, and cleaning entrances

  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours, setting alarm system, and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created

  • Use insecticides to prevent infestation by dangerous pests

  • Request supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties

  • Comply with all applicable building and fire regulations

  • Support Center Manager concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems

  • Notify Center Manager concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems

  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours, setting the alarm system, and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created

  • Support Center Manager in procuring bids for facility-related services for repairs, maintenance and repairs
  • Respond promptly to facility-related emergencies in courteous and helpful manner, in partnership with Center Manager

Education and/or Experience

High school degree or GED required. Associates Degree or Certification in related vocational or technical field preferred. A background in general maintenance or other maintenance responsibilities that require working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing and/or HVAC systems. Minimum of three to five years of related experience and/or training required. Other valuable experiences include: custodial services, hospitality and event management.

Competencies

  • Ability to understand, repair, and maintain electrical, mechanical, plumbing and other related systems

  • Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment, supplies and appliances
  • Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices
  • Knowledge of all applicable building and fire regulations

  • Solid interpersonal skills

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs

  • Ability to operate office machines/equipment

Type of work environment associated with the job – Work is performed in various locations inside and outside of the building where incumbents may be exposed to extremes of heat or cold, dust, noise and inclement weather. Work requires moderate physical exertion including some lifting, climbing, bending, stretching and stooping. High community contact. Some evening and weekend hours.
